Dr David Holcombe

BSc MBBS PhD FRANZCO
Senior Lecturer University of Queensland

Dr David Holcombe graduated from the University of Queensland Medical School with a combined Bachelor of Medicine / Bachelor of Surgery, and a Doctor of Philosophy (MBBS PhD). The topic of his PhD was retinal neuro-protection. During the period of his PhD, Dr Holcombe tutored medical students at the University of Queensland.

Dr Holcombe did his residency years at the Royal Brisbane Hospital before being selected for the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmology training program in Melbourne where he spent considerable time training at the prestigious Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. He undertook two years of basic ophthalmology training, followed by two years of advanced training, and a further year of subspecialisation in the areas of cataract surgery and retinal disease, including macula degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.

Dr Holcombe then relocated back to South East Queensland to establish Toowoomba Ophthalmic Consultants at 20 Goggs Street Toowoomba, with the aim of providing the very best for his patients and their vision with excellence in knowledge, equipment, and facilities, and a caring friendly environment. He remains actively involved with teaching, regularly tutoring medical students, optometry students, and optometrists and holds the position of Senior Lecturer at the University of Queensland Medical School.

Doctor of Philosophy

Dr Holcombe has completed a PhD at the University of Queensland (2007) entitled: Development and characterization of a glaucoma model and investigations into retinal glutamate transport. This PhD was supervised by Dr Nigel Barnett (DPhil) and Professor Glen Gole (MBBS MD FRANZCO FRACS). It was examined by Professor Neville N. Obsorne, University of Oxford UK, and Professor Jonathon Stone, University of Sydney. This PhD investigated the mechanisms of ganglion cell death in glaucoma using immunohistochemical, histochemical, and electroretinographical techniques.

The Professor of Ophthalmology at Oxford University final comments included, “My overall conclusion is that the candidate has produced an excellent thesis both in content and discussion……The candidate needs to be complimented for producing an excellent and outstanding thesis free of any major errors and significant in content. My recommendation, is that the thesis be accepted as outstanding and worthy for the award of a PhD degree”.
